LaSA remembers and honors Cesar Chavez leading farmworkers on a peaceful 300-mile march from Delano to Sacramento to raise awareness of the farmworkers' plight. Participants in our challenge will either run/walk/hike 3 miles, participate in 30 physical activities, or run/walk/hike 300 miles to symbolize the 300 miles Chavez walked with farmworkers. Proceeds from this event will go to the LaSA scholarship fund benefitting Latinx UC students. Click here for details on the challenge.

Dia de los Muertos 2018
In celebration of Dia del los Muertos, LaSA will be hosting three events during the week of October 29. Dia del los Muertos is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage elsewhere. This holiday, celebrated October 31 - November 2, gathers family and friends to remember and pray for loved ones who have passed and to help support their spiritual journey.

UCPath Dia de los Muertos Celebration

The UCPath Center celebrated Dia de los Muertos with an Ofrenda where staff members displayed photos of their lost loved ones. Staff were invited to enjoy homemade horchata, pan dulce and traditional Mexican candies during the celebration. Several staff members in Workforce Administration (WFA) also painted their faces in the sugar skull style for the celebration. A special thank you to Cierra Covarrubias for coordinating this event for the UCPath Center.

Student Regent (2016-17)
Marcela Ramirez is the 2016-2017 Student Regent. She is a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Riverside in the Higher Education Administration and Policy program through the Graduate School of Education. Ramirez is currently serving as the graduate student representative on the UC Office of the President LGBT Advisory Committee and was previously a member of the Undocumented Student Task Force at UC Riverside.

A University of California Board of Regents special committee has nominated UC Berkeley law student Paul Monge as the 2017-18 Student Regent. Monge is currently the systemwide graduate student representative on the University Committee on Planning and Budget, advising UC on policies regarding capital planning, budget development and resource allocation.

Giving Tree Drive 2013
The UCOP Giving Tree drive brought in gifts and smiles to 227 low-income children in the Bay Area. The kids submitted their gift wishes for posting on the Franklin holiday tree (thanks to Christmas Home's donation) and OP staff brought in gifts to match their requests. LaSA hosted a tamale and bake sale in observation of Dia de los Muertos. Also known as Day of the Dead, this holiday is widely celebrated in Mexico from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and commemorates the deceased.
There was also a Dia de Los Muertos display with a glass bowl for personal notes and photos of deceased love ones. More info (pdf)
